Use case
List Commercial Contractors in Mobile and Baldwin Counties
Every LBGC-licensed commercial contractor and subcontractor with a Mobile or Baldwin County, Alabama mailing address, with phone, fax, address, classifications and bid limit.
Picture this: you manage the sales desk at a heavy-equipment rental yard off I-10 in Mobile. Excavators, dozers, skid steers and trench boxes go out by the week, and the customers who rent them most are the commercial outfits doing site work, utilities and roads on both sides of Mobile Bay. You want a list of every one of them in Mobile and Baldwin counties, with a phone number, so your two outside reps can work it from Theodore to Gulf Shores before spring bid season. In Alabama the cleanest definition of “commercial contractor” is a licence from the Alabama Licensing Board for General Contractors (LBGC), so that is the list you want.
The free way first
Start here, because it costs nothing. The CSV link on that page downloaded 8,917 licensees on 2026-10-06, and the grid’s search box filters on name, city, state, specialty and phone. If your reps only cover the city of Mobile, filter the file to CITY = MOBILE and you have most of what you need: 269 of the firms in our Mobile County run used that mailing city.
Two counties are where the free file starts costing time. It has no county column, so you have to assemble the city list yourself, and on the Baldwin side alone that means Fairhope (55 firms in our run), Daphne (50), Orange Beach (39), Foley (34) and Gulf Shores (32) before you reach Bay Minette, Spanish Fort, Robertsdale, Elberta and Summerdale. Then 4,729 of the 8,917 rows are firms mailing from outside Alabama, and every classification a firm holds is packed into one Specialty cell. If you do this once a year, the CSV and an hour in Excel is a fair answer.
The run
Alabama Commercial Contractor Directory & Leads (LBGC) reads that same roster and does the county work for you. This is the published example task:
{
"counties": ["Mobile", "Baldwin"]
}
No trade is set, so every classification comes back. On 2026-10-06 it returned 738 contractors in 3.0 seconds on our machine: 402 in Mobile County and 336 in Baldwin. The actor assigns each firm a county from its mailing ZIP (665 rows) or, where the ZIP did not settle it, from its mailing city (73 rows), and records which in county_method. Out-of-state firms are dropped whenever a county is set, so all 738 have an Alabama address. At $0.002 per contractor the run comes to $1.476.
What comes back
Here is one Mobile row from the run, trimmed to the fields a rental rep uses:
{
"business_name": "BALLCON INC",
"phone": "(251) 423-3536",
"fax": "(251) 649-4611",
"address": "2070 REPOLL ROAD",
"is_po_box": false,
"city": "MOBILE",
"zip_code": "36695",
"county": "Mobile",
"county_method": "zip",
"license_number": "26056",
"status": "Active",
"classifications": "H/RR: HEAVY AND RAILROAD, M-S: INDUSTRIAL PIPE WORK AND INSULATION, MU: MUNICIPAL AND UTILITY, SC: EQUIPMENT AND MACHINERY INSTALLATION",
"classification_codes": ["H/RR", "M-S", "MU", "SC"],
"bid_limit": "Unlimited"
}
Coverage across the 738 rows: phone on all 738, zip_code and address on all 738, fax on 260. Of the street addresses, 214 are PO boxes (119 in Baldwin, 95 in Mobile), and is_po_box flags them so a rep driving the route can skip them.
Cutting it down to the firms that rent iron
The all-classification list is broad on purpose. 277 of the 738 are subcontractor registrations (licence numbers starting S-), which covers fire alarms and lift installers alongside concrete crews. 120 hold Building Construction (BC), 65 Municipal and Utility (MU), 41 Highways and Streets (HS), 35 Heavy and Railroad (H/RR) and 21 Demolition (D).
For an equipment yard, filter classification_codes to the four earthmoving prime classifications: HS, MU, H/RR or D. In our run that left 95 firms, 60 in Mobile and 35 in Baldwin, every one with a phone. 85 of the 95 carry an “Unlimited” bid_limit, meaning LBGC lets them bid jobs of any size. The other 10 are capped at $1,000,000 (4) or $3,000,000 (6). Sort the unlimited ones first. If you also want the smaller crews, adding the subcontract versions (HS-S, MU-S, H/RR-S) widens it to 184.
You can skip the filtering step by passing those codes in trades instead, which also bills only the matching rows. We counted from the full run here, so we have not timed that variant.
Worth knowing
LBGC’s roster carries no email, so there is no email on any row; plan on phone, fax and a visit. LBGC licenses commercial work only. Residential home builders and roofers are licensed by the Alabama Home Builders Licensure Board and will not appear. The county is derived from the mailing address, so a Baldwin crew that mails from a Mobile PO box is listed under Mobile. 11 rows carry an “Inactive” status; drop them before you call.
Run it yourself: How to run Alabama Commercial Contractor Directory & Leads (LBGC) walks through the input form step by step. For the Birmingham side of the state, Build a Birmingham-Area Building Contractor Call List runs the same actor for BC licensees in Jefferson and Shelby counties.
Before you extend credit on a big rental, Alabama Contractor License Lookup & Verify checks one firm’s LBGC licence by name or number. If your yard also serves the Florida Panhandle, Florida Contractor Directory & Leads Scraper builds a county list from Florida’s licensing board.
